Lynwood Park Elementary and High School, 1949 - 1968 (Now known as Lynwood Park Recreation Center)

This site was the home of the Lynwood Park Elementary and High School the home of the “Mighty Rattlers.” As the oldest predominately African American Community in DeKalb County, Lynwood Park was known for its unity, strength, and independence.

This site was the home of the Lynwood Park Elementary and High School the home of the “Mighty Rattlers.” As the oldest predominately African American Community in DeKalb County, Lynwood Park was known for its unity, strength, and independence.


A historic marker was placed on the exterior of Lynwood Park Recreation Center to recognize the history of Lynwood School as an important part of the history of Brookhaven. The Lynwood Park Trailblazer Community Room within the Lynwood Park Recreation Center was dedicated to the historic Lynwood Park Community members for meetings and events related to the community.


The building that is today’s Lynwood Park Recreation Center was the second school built in the neighborhood. The first school was a small wooden building, built by the community in 1942.
